Our mission

The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) is the first and only provincial health organization of its kind in Canada.

Our mission is to transform the way health care is delivered to First Nations people in BC.

Many backgrounds, one journey

We stand for better health services for First Nations people in BC. By joining the FNHA, you will have the opportunity to contribute meaningful work within a trailblazing organization rich with transformative learning opportunities.

We are here to transform BC’s health system, for better.

We’re looking for compassionate individuals to be part of an innovative and multicultural organization—one that is bringing health and wellness to Indigenous and First Nations populations in BC. We invite you to join us on a journey to wellness.

Cultural safety and humility

At the FNHA, you will have a sense of kinship with those who share your drive to create change in the world and in yourself.

We are wellness champions. We walk with community, meeting people where they are to join them on their healing journey towards wellness.

System-wide change begins with every individual that works in health by implementing the protocol of cultural safety and humility. Cultural safety includes an understanding of what health and wellness means to First Nations today. First Nations in BC have defined what health and wellness means to them, depicted in the First Nations Perspective on Health and Wellness.

The phrase “it starts with me” signifies how everyone, whether a health care professional, staff, manager, leader, First Nations person or family member, can be a part of achieving the vision for a culturally safe health care system for First Nations in BC.

Our guiding principles for hiring

  1. By and for First Nations: As a BC First Nations organization, it is important for those we serve to see themselves meaningfully represented in the FNHA’s workforce. The FNHA is dedicated to increasing the number of First Nations employees at all organizational levels and will give preference to First Nations candidates if they are suitably qualified.
  2. Leadership Development: The FNHA will focus on increasing the number of First Nations employees in leadership positions.
  3. Meritocracy: Experience with First Nations, knowledge of Indigenous culture and history, future potential, abilities and organizational cultural fit as determined by a consistent and fair selection process.
  4. Long-term fit: The FNHA will recruit candidates with the knowledge, skills, abilities and other core competencies that align with immediate and long-term organizational needs and emphasize internal development and career progression in support of those needs whenever possible.
